After the intense rain in Bengaluru resulted in the collapse of a retaining wall along the Vrishabhavathi river along the Mysore Road, the civic officials have now closed the west lane of the road.
The wall near Mylasandra collapsed due to heavy rains on Thursday. Following that, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has reportedly issued orders to engineers to prevent further mishaps on the road similar to this. The orders were issued after an inspection that was carried out by the Bruha Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Commissioner BH Anil Kumar and the Mayor M Goutham on Friday. The road has been closed for about a kilometer along the road to avoid any traffic mishaps. Mayor Goutham spoke to the media and said,
“The westward lane was closed for repair work. To ensure there is no more damage, sandbags have been placed and barricades have been erected.”
According to BH Anil Kumar, the water levels in the Vrishabhavathi river had risen by at least 3-4 feet after heavy rainfall. The increased water level created a pressure that caused the wall to collapse.
On Thursday, the area of Kengeri witnessed a rainfall of 185 mm that washed away the wall that was around 130 to 140 meters in length. According to Srinivas Reddy, the director of the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), Kengeri received the most rainfall in Bengaluru.
Inquiry Launched To Look Into The Matter
An inquiry has been launched to look into what led to the collapse of the retaining wall. The inquiry will also detail the work done by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike on the retaining wall and the funds spent for the same. The report after the investigation will be submitted to the government.
Following the uncalled mishap in Kengeri, other stormwater drains across the city will be reviewed. As the monsoon season is set to hit the capital and is slated to stay atleast for two months, the Municipal body is hoping no such incidents would happen in the city. On Saturday, the state reported 919 cases and the city of Bengaluru reported 596 cases, both of which is the highest daily increase.
