Former Japanese leader Shinzo Abe is in critical condition and undergoing emergency treatment after he was shot on Friday morning in Nara, Japan. He suffered a gunshot wound to the neck, according to officials.
Attack on Shinzo Abe
On Friday before the shooting, Shinzo Abe had been in Nara giving an election campaign speech on the street, to support Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) candidates ahead of Upper House elections scheduled for Sunday. Around 11:30 am sound of gunshots was heard. According to LDP officials, he was shot in the chest. Police have nabbed one suspect.

According to Japanese Police, a 41-year-old man suspected of carrying out the shooting had been arrested. The suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, told police he was unhappy with Abe and wanted to kill him.
Critical Condition
Further, reports revealed that Abe was receiving the utmost medical treatment. Abe, who is 67 and was Japan’s longest-serving leader before stepping down in 2020, was in cardio and pulmonary arrest as he was being airlifted to the hospital, local fire department official Makoto Morimoto said.

The current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida struggling to keep emotions in check said Abe was in grave condition and the assault on him during the campaign for Sunday’s upper house election was an unacceptable attack on the foundation of Japan’s democracy.
