Vikram star Kamal Haasan opened up about the pan-India cinema phenomenon in South film Industry. He believes that it (South Films) is just an Indian film and doesn’t understand the north vs south cinema debate.
Bollywood vs South Films debate
The Bollywood vs South Films row has caused a lot of arguments in the Indian film industry. Everyone has an opinion on it, where some think that South films are better while many others praise the Bollywood industry to be the senior. Now, it is superstar Kamal Haasan who has shared his thoughts on the matter.
Kamal Haasan is gearing for the release of his much anticipated pan-Indian film Vikram on June 3, co-starring Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil. The Kollywood superstar is currently on a promotional tour for his film and Mumbai is the first stop. The actor interacted with the media about the film and opened up on pan Indian cinema.
“I am an Indian, what are you? For me, the Taj Mahal is mine and the Madurai temple is yours. Kanyakumari is as much yours as Kashmir is mine,” said Haasan as he was asked about the Pan India craze.
Cinema unites people
The superstar called films to be the only place where people are united. He further exclaimed that when someone says that a South film is succeeding, it is the Indian film that has succeeded
“Film speaks a world language, we are a country with such diversity but great unity. We as a country don’t speak a language but sing the national anthem with pride. The film takes in part, does its duty in uniting people. This is the only place you don’t see the cast and status of the next man sitting in the cinema hall.”
“It is not a South film that is succeeding, it’s an Indian film succeeding. That’s always better than a Hollywood film succeeding. We learned to make big films from films like Mughal-E-Azam and Sholay. These movies were so big that Tamil or Malayalam films couldn’t even try them. Mughal-E-Azam is not just intelligence, it is about guts. So, we do understand and respect each other. We should. If you think a film is good, appreciate it. Language does not matter.”
Coming to the film, Vikram is written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Kamal Haasan’s film is a multi-starrer action drama. Besides Haasan, the film also stars Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil in the lead roles. Also, actor Suriya has a key cameo role in the movie. Though the movie’s title is borrowed from Haasan’s 1986 actioner Vikram, the two films have nothing in common.
