The iconic Ambassador car, once the symbol of the powerful elite, is aiming to make a comeback on Indian roads. The new car is likely to hit the Indian market again in the year 2024 and the company is planning to launch it in an electric vehicle avatar.
The iconic Ambassador
The Ambassador needs no introduction and these days, this icon vehicle has disappeared from our roads. However, it seems the Ambassador’s name would be back on the roads but as an all-new electric sedan.
According to sources, Hindustan Motors, the manufacturer of a well-known brand of cars, is planning to collaborate with a European electric vehicle manufacturer. The goal is to produce electric cars and as per reports, the two companies have signed an agreement to seal the partnership.
Future Electric vehicles
Earlier, Hindustan Motors had sold the Ambassador name to Peugeot for Rs 80 crores, which included the brand and rights. With Peugeot, Hindustan Motors is collaborating for producing electric vehicles, reports added.
Initially, both the companies together will produce electric two-wheelers. Reports also said that the collaboration will be on a 51:49 ratio, where the controlling stake will be with Hindustan Motors.
After this, both would collaborate and bring back the car in a new avatar. The electric Ambassador could be made in Chennai where once Mitsubishi cars were made. The new Ambassador would be completely new and have a different look along with a modern interior.
“Mechanical and design work for the new engine has reached an advanced stage.” The statement hints that an electric-powered Hindustan Ambassador is still some time away from the Indian market. An ICE-powered iteration of the sedan will make its way to us by 2024 instead. The development work on the all-new Hindustan Ambassador will be done by the Groupe PSA, as it owns the rights of the ‘Ambassador’ brand currently,” said Uttam Bose, Director of Hindustan Motors.
