Guwahati: Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday asserted men must declare their religion, job and income to their partners before marrying, and confirmed that the state government has already begun drafting legislation in this regard. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister also added that the bill will be mandatory for all marriages and would empower women.

While speaking to media, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “One should not get married if there’s no transparency between husband-wife. Disclosure is important like my religion, what I do for a living, what’s my income. Not saying that you should disclosure only your religion, you should also disclose your income and job.”

The Assam minister stressed that the state government’s proposal is not something about ‘love jihad’ but it would be mandatory for all religions. The government’s idea is that a couple should not hide its identity, job and income from each other and that there should be transparency in marriage, he added.

“We have started drafting legislation in this regard,” announced the BJP minister.

He continued saying, “It will be mandatory for all marriages. There will be a disclosure pro forma given to a wife who will give it to her husband. It won’t be only about religion but everything that a wife needs to know.”

Before saying the proposed legislation will be about empowering women, Sarma assured it won’t be in line with the laws recently passed/proposed in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
