The Hathras Police booked Congress leader and Rahul Gandhi’s aide Shyoraj Jivan under sedition charges. This comes after Jivan was caught on camera inciting riots in Hathras over the death of a 19-year-old Dalit woman after she was allegedly gang-raped by four men.

Talking to the media after his arrest, Jivan said, “I am not a rioter. Whole life I have worked to promote communal harmony. I have been in people’s service for the last 40 years and not a single FIR has been filed against me.” He also thanked the media saying, “thank you for making me the biggest traitor of India.”

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that his government will not spare any conspirators.

“Who is trying to incite violence in the name of caste and religion? The same faces were responsible for Muzzafarpur riots and forcing local businessmen to migrate. Now, they are attempting to repeat it again,” he added. Jivan arrived at the police station on Thursday saying he had been summoned by the cops.

“I believe in I believe in India’s constitution that’s why I have come here to give my statement,” he said.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Police alleged that the funding of close to Rs 50 crores funding sourced from Mauritius was used by Popular Front of India (PFI) to incite caste violence in Hathras. On Monday, four people who were on their way to Hathras from Delhi were apprehended from Mathura.

UP Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said that they have links with PFI. The four have now been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and for sedition and have been remanded to 14 days judicial custody.

The UP government has already requested the Supreme Court to monitor the CBI probe into the case, alleging that “vested interests are attempting to ascribe motive to derail a fair probe”.
