Veteran Choreographer Saroj Khan Passes Away At 71

Veteran Bollywood Choreographer Saroj Khan passed away on Friday morning following a cardiac arrest. She was 71 years old.

Probably the most renowned choreographer to come out of the Hindi Film Industry, Saroj Khan was highly influential for the success of many actors including Madhuri Dixit. Khan was admitted to Mumbai’s Guru Nanak Hospital on the 17th of June after she complained of having difficulty breathing. Khan’s career spanned over 40 years in the industry during which she has choreographed over 2,000 songs. Some of the iconic songs of Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi have Saroj Khan’s name attached to it.

Khan was born in the year 1948 and at the age of three, she started her career as a child artist and soon became a background dancer in various Hindi film songs. She was under the mentorship of director B Sohanlal. After working for years as an assistant choreographer, she did her first independent project in the form of Geeta Mera Naam in the year 1974.

However, she shot to fame after she choreographed the song Hawa Hawai in the film Mr. India in the year 1987. The song starred Sridevi and from then began the collaboration between the two artists as they went onto to work in films like Nagina and Chandni. After this, she had a long term collaboration with Madhuri Dixit in songs like Ek Do Teen, Hum Ko Aaj Kal Hai Intezaar, Dhak Dhak Karne Laga, Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai, and Tamma Tamma. Her last choreographic work was the song Tabah Ho Gaye from the film Kalank in the year 2019.

Since the lockdown, the Indian film industry has lost many of its actors. It was Irrfan Khan who passed away due to a long illness. A day after the death of Khan, veteran Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor passed away. Even as Bollywood was recovering from the loss of two gems, music director Wajid too breathed his last.

The month of June worsened this situation as the whole country was shaken by the sudden demise of Sushant Singh Rajput who hanged himself in his Bandra Residence.
