Stephen Hawking went back to the stars in the universe from whence he came. He died Wednesday due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a complex and progressive neurodegenerative disease. He was 76.
Stephen was best known for his works on black holes and he theorized that black holes were inescapable and they emitted a form of radiation. Hawking’s work on unifying Einstein’s general theory of relativity with the quantum physics is regarded as one of the monumental feats in Mathematics and Physical science. ‘A Brief History of Time: From Big Bang to Black Holes’ sold 10 million copies worldwide and till date, this book by Hawking is considered as one of the World’s best-selling science books of all time.
In 1963, when Stephen was just 21, he was diagnosed with the deadly and debilitating motor neuron disease. In the case of ALS, 80% die within five years of diagnosis and Hawking was just given two years. As a miracle, Stephen survived for decades leaving the history of medical science in splits.

It was 2011, Hawking appeared on Discovery Channel’s ‘Curiosity’ where he gave his insights on the origins of the universe and simply rejected the likelihood of both a God and an afterlife.
“There is probably no heaven, and no afterlife either. We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe, and for that, I’m extremely grateful.”
Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change. As Stephen used to say, “I’m not afraid of death, but I’m in no hurry to die.” The beautiful mind is no more and now, we are utterly alone in a dark, infinite universe together.
