On Friday, the United States President Donald Trump announced that America is terminating all its relationship with the World Health Organisation following the accusation of mishandling the pandemic by the health body.
The funding of the World Health Organisation will now be diverted to other global health organizations, the President said. He also announced a series of actions against China including denying entry of certain Chinese nationals into America and also tightening Chinese investments in the country. The President also announced that the country would end its special treatment to Hong Kong and will also revise travel advisory in order to warn of surveillance in Hong Kong.
In his aggressive speech from the White House, the President said that the world needs answers from China and went all the way to claim that the Chinese have ripped the United States as no has ever has done before. He accused the Communist-led country of stealing intellectual property, taking billions away from the United States, and of violating the World Trade Organisation commitment. The Chinese have gotten away with theft because of past politicians and past Presidents, he said. He further said,
“The United States wants an open and constructive relationship with China, but achieving this relationship requires us to vigorously defend our national interest. These plain facts cannot be overlooked or swept aside.”
The Chinese control over WHO
He reiterated his claim about China’s mismanagement of the pandemic because of which the whole world is suffering. The United States has recorded 100,000 deaths due to the novel coronavirus and the world has witnessed over a million deaths. He said,
“Chinese officials ignored their reporting obligations to the World Health Organisation and pressured the World Health Organisation to mislead the world when the virus was first discovered by Chinese authorities. Countless lives have been taken, and profound economic hardship has been inflicted all around the globe.”
He alleged that China has complete control over the World Health Organisation despite paying 40 million dollars a year whereas the United States contributes over 450 million dollars a year. Speaking about WHO, he said,
“We have detailed the reforms that it must take and engage with them directly, but they have refused to act. Because they have failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms, we will be today terminating our relationship with the World Health Organisation and redirecting those funds to other worldwide and deserving urgent global public health needs.”
