UP Cop

In a shocking video that surfaced the internet on Sunday, a police official from the state of Uttar Pradesh was seen thrashing a man with a stick as the man lies on the ground crying for help and mercy. The official is seen hitting on various parts of the body.

The video that was widely shared from the Samajwadi Party account of twitter appears to have shot from a distance. The angle gives an aerial view of the barbaric act. If reports are to be believed, the video was filmed on the 1st of May. The media house, NDTV claims that the man getting beaten in the video is reportedly mentally challenged. Many twitter handles have shared the video condemning the ‘barbaric act of UP Police’.

The Samajwadi Party further claimed that the man was innocent and mentally handicapped and was beaten brutally by the Uttar Pradesh Police. The political party also said that the suspension of the officer following the video evidence will be insufficient. The party has asked for an investigation and the suspension of the station in charge as well.

The victim was mentally unstable, claims NDTV

The NDTV channel quoted the Etawah police and identified the man being attacked as Sunil Yadav. According to the police, Sunil Yadav is a drug addict and is prone to assaulting local residents. After a villager complained against Yadav of assault and arson, the police had reached his home to apprehend him. However, police claim that Yadav tried to attack them with a knife when they reached his residence.

Although the initial report of the police on the case claimed that the police had used ‘minimal’ force to arrest Yadav, a detailed probe report has admitted that one of the officials who was assigned the job had resorted to ‘excessive force’.
