Three out of the four convicts of the horrific Nirbhaya rape and murder case have moved to Delhi High Court today to seek a stay on their execution that is scheduled on 20th March at 5.30 am. A bench headed by Justice Manmohan was forced to conduct a late-night hearing hours before the execution. The bench later dismissed the plea.
The plea that had mentioned to the registry officials who put it up before the Chief Justice of India who assigned the matter to a bench headed by Justice Manmohan. Earlier in the day, the Delhi Patiala Court had dismissed the plea to stay the execution. That was followed by a hysterical act by the wife of a convict who broke down in front of the court crying injustice.
After a long delay and repeated attempts to evade the execution, the Delhi High Court’s decision to not entertain the plea might be the final nail in the coffin for the Nirbhaya convicts who have tried to maneuver the law in every possible way to seek a stay on their punishment.
On 16th December 2012, a young woman was gang-raped by six men inside a bus, tortured her further with an iron rod and was thrown out of the bus along with her friend. Battling for life, she died in the hospital on the 29th of December. Out of the six convicts, one has been dead after he was found hanging in jail, the other was sent to a reform home for being a minor while the other four will be executed.
The four convicts in the Nirbhaya case – Pawan Gupta, Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, and Akshay Kumar Singh are currently in the Tihar Jail. Despite approaching international courts and the Human Rights Commission, the convicts are set to be hanged in Tihar on March 20.
Tihar Jail on Tuesday also conducted a dummy trial of the hanging by hangmen Pawan who hails from Meerut. After seven years, the convicts of the deadly act of crime will finally be punished tomorrow.
