Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji Passes Away At 88 ; PM Modi to Common Man, Tributes Paid on Twitter

Pejawar Mutt Chief’s Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji passed away owing to multiple organ failure. Seer’s health condition was very critical and it saw a further decline on Saturday. He passed away at around 9.20 am, after he was admitted to the Kasturba Medical Hospital in Mangaluru at around 5 am on December 20.

The seer was shifted to Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt on Sunday morning from KMC Hospital where he was under treatment. The condition was critical and he was connected to a ventilator at the hospital.

The 88-year-old was hospitalized on December 20 after he developed breathing difficulty. He was in the ICU since then. Doctors had earlier said that Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji was being treated for extensive pneumonia.

Karnataka government has announced 3-day mourning from December 29 to December 31, following the demise of Pejavara Mutt Seer Vishwesha Teertha Swami.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to pay his last respects and said,

“Sri Vishvesha Teertha Swamiji of the Sri Pejawara Matha, Udupi will remain in the hearts and minds of lakhs of people for whom he was always a guiding light. A powerhouse of service and spirituality, he continuously worked for a more just and compassionate society. Om Shanti. (SIC)”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, too, didn’t forget to remember the Seer to pay homage. “Deeply pained to learn about the demise of Sri Sri Vishwesha Teertha Swami ji of the Pejawar mutt, Udupi. He was an epitome of humanity, kindness, and knowledge. His selfless contribution towards the welfare of people and society has no parallels (SIC),” he said.

About Vishwesha Teertharu in Brief

Sri Viswesha Tirtharu was a noted personality and prominent among the Indian Seers. He was the former presiding Swamiji of the Sri Pejavara Adokshaja Mutt, one of the Ashta Mutts founded by Sri Madhwacharya.

Born in the year 1931 at Ramakunja to a Shivalli Madhwa Brahmin family, his pre-sanyasa name was Venkataramana. He was inducted into Sanyasa at the young age of 7 years in 1938.

Sri Vishwesha Teertharu was widely known for his social works and is said to have started many educational and social service organizations. Prominent among them are The Akhila Bharat Madhwa Mandala ABMM centre to help the poor students.

He has also advocated Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and strongly voiced in support of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Also known as the ‘Rashtra Swamiji’. the seer is recognized as a great social reformer of the country.
