After the scrapping of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, everyone is wondering what is next for the newly recommended Union Territory. According to reports, retired IPS officer Vijay Kumar is most likely to be appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir UT. Both Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh will officially become union territories on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on October 31.

Vijay Kumar’s Name Is In The Reckoning  

According to reports, the Ministry of Home Affairs is considering the name of Vijay Kumar for the post of Lt. Governor of J&K. Vijay Kumar is an IPS officer of 1975 batch of Tamil Nadu cadre. He held the post of senior security advisor in the MHA. Vijay Kumar’s name graced the headlines when he successfully led the special task force conducting “Operation Cocoon” in2004 leading to the elimination of Veerappan, the notorious sandalwood and elephant tusk smuggler.

He was a part of the elite Special Protection Group (SPG) of former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi from 1985 to 1990. He was also the senior advisor to Home Ministry for the Left Wing Extremism areas. At present, Vijay Kumar is serving as an advisor to Jammu and Kashmir Governor with Ecology, Forest, Home and Environment, Health and Medical Education, Hospitality and Protocol, Youth Services and Sports, Information, Estates, and Civil Aviation portfolios.  

Served On Multiple Posts In Indian Police Force

Born and brought up in Tamil Nadu, Vijay Kumar is the son of a retired Police Officer, Mr. M. Krishnan Nair. After completing his bachelor’s and master’s in Law from the Madras University, he went on to complete an MBA from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). He also completed a Masters in Business Law degree at Bangalore’s National Law School of India University.   

He was chosen to lead the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad in 2008. Vijay Kumar has also worked as the Director-general of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) from 2010 to 2012.
