There are various types of windows that add to the value of your home. They allow natural light into your home during the daytime and let air enter in to keep your room fresh and dry. Windows also add to the style of your home, be it traditional or contemporary. You will find that any window can be customized to suit your needs.

Types of windows in homes

  1. Double-hung windows – these windows have two sashes which slide vertically from top to bottom in the frame. They can open wide from the top or bottom, yet they remain inside the frame and do not protrude on the outside. Single hung windows only allow the bottom of the window to move while the top remains stationary.
  2. Casement windows – These windows are hinged and operate by a turn of a crank mechanism. They may be hinged on the left or right to open outward.
  3. Awning windows – These windows are hinged on the top and open outward allowing air in from the left or right and the bottom. They may be installed above or below, alongside a stationary or moving window.
  4. Picture window – This is a large window that is immobile. It allows maximum light inside the home and offers maximum views of the outdoors.
  5. Transom window – This is a narrow window that can be operative or non-operative, and situated above a door or window to allow more sunlight in.
  6. Slider window – These windows glide along a track and have at least one window that is operative. They slide horizontally over the other window and are more often used in modern homes.
  7. Stationary windows – These windows are inoperative and do not open. They can be customized in any shape and any angle. They are often found in modern homes together with moveable windows.
  8. Bay or bow windows – These windows allow for more space inside the home as they protrude outside the home. They are a combination of windows but often have a stationary window in the middle.

What is the best material for windows?

  1. Wood – It has been around for centuries and was once the go-to material for windows. Wood window frame repair can be done easily by the homeowner and are good insulators.
  2. Fiberglass – One of the newer frame options which are replacing wood.
