Netflix’s Indian short documentary film, ‘period end of silence’ directed by A filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi, produced by Indian producer Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment has won the Oscars 2019. India’s proud moment at the Oscars 2019 came exactly a decade after A R Rahman and sound engineer Resul Pookutty won the Academy awards for “Slumdog Millionaire” in the year 2009.
This film is set on rural India and is on the subject that is still a taboo in our country and many other parts of the world – ‘menstruation’. The film won the Oscar in the Documentary Short Subject category at the 91st Academy Awards. The film is a part of The Pad Project that was started by students at the Oakwood School in Los Angeles and their teacher, Melissa Berton.
The set up of the film is at Hapur village situated outside Delhi. Here women fight against the deeply rooted stigma of menstruation and they create a revolution. These women had no access to sanitary pads for centuries. This lead to many health issues and even girls dropping out of schools. The women learn to manufacture and market their own pads, and they empower their community after a sanitary pad vending machine is installed in the village, their brand is known as FLY.
Zehtabchi said “ I’m not crying because I’m on my period or anything. I can’t believe a film on menstruation won an Oscar.”
According to Berton “The project was born because her students in LA and people in India wanted to make a human rights difference.”
