Each time a woman stands up for herself, she stands up for all women. There have been many instances in Indian sporting where Women have proved their part and now it is Apurvi Chandel’s turn to make us proud. A 26-year-old shooter Apurvi Chandela wins India’s first world cup gold in Women’s 10m Rifle.
A World-Record Broken
Apurvi Chandela shot 252.9 in a thrilling 10m Women Air Rifle finale to earn the top prize on Day 1 of the tournament in New Delhi. On Saturday, in a tournament held at Dr. Kami Singh shooting range in New Delhi, Apurvi Chandela broke World record to win Gold for India in ISSF World Cup 2019. It is India’s first and what a proud moment it is.
A Slow Start in the Final
Apurvi had a slow start where she shot 10.1 standing at the 7th position after the first two series of five shots. She didn’t lose hope and as the game progressed, she gained the momentum to stay on top.
“I do not usually plan my scoring like that. I think, at the start, my positioning was a little off. So, I tweaked my settings a bit, which eventually bore the result,” the shooter said at the press conference after the match.
A Neck-and-neck Battle with China’s Zhao Ruozhu
In the final round, Apurvi Chandela had to face China’s Zhao who had earlier broken the World Record in the Qualification stage, scoring 634 points. It was a neck-and-neck battle. However, Ruozhu had to settle for silver as Chandela shot a 10.6 and a 10.8 to win the Gold. On the other hand, China’s Xu Hong won Bronze scoring 230.4 in the final.
Post-match, speaking about the intense-filled final clash, Chandela recalled the Munich World Cup 2018. She said, “In the Munich World Cup, I was leading and then I dropped down. It was a freak shot, it wasn’t a malfunction. It was my error. But I am glad, I was able to move past that because such things can play in your mind. I think I beat myself in that way.”
