Shahrukh Khan’s Zero Dazzles With Super Starcast; Disappoints With Dull Scenes & Inconsistency

One of the most awaited movies of the year, “Zero” from Shahrukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment and directed by Anand L. Rai has released today. Naturally, the hype surrounding the film has been tremendous, especially because of its strong pairing of Badshah of Bollywood with Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. Cameos by super stalwarts like Salman Khan, Alia Bhatt, Abhay Deol, Madhavan, Karishma Kapoor, and late Sridevi (it is probably her last screen appearance) add the much-needed tadka.

The Plot Of Zero

The story is about Bauua Singh (Shahrukh Khan) who lives in Meerut, is a vertically challenged impulsive and self-absorbed person. However, his height does not come in the way of his confidence and lively spirit as he squanders all the wealth of his father (Tigmanshu Dhulia). He comes across Aafia (Anushka Sharma), who is a highly qualified scientist suffering from cerebral palsy. Their sufferings and flaws form a common bond between Aafia and Bauua Singh even though they both have very different personalities.

Bauua is also a big fan of Babita Kumari (Katrina Kaif), a Bollywood diva and the two meet eventually leading to more drama in the movie. The first half is all about the unconventional romance. The second half is about the love story of Bauua and how he reaches Mumbai. From here starts the cameo appearances of different stars and also the song Issaqbazzi with Salman and Shahrukh. The story starts in Meerut, goes to Mumbai, the US and ultimately ventures into a Mars-inspired mission.

Zero Fails To Engage

Written by Himanshu Sharma, the story of Zero has its ups and downs. But it simply fails to translate that larger-than-life concept of love story on the canvas of the screen. One moment the movie is all fun and comedy and the next moment it just off the track making the audience wonder what exactly the story is trying to tell or show. So, even though there is nothing offending about Zero, there is nothing in there to keep you engaged for three and a half hours in the cinema theater.

One thing that is worth mentioning is that the characters of the movie despite all their physical limitations overpower the challenges with their vibrancy, vitality, and resilience. Of course, Shahrukh Khan pulls of those colorful romantic moments with great aplomb and full of intensity and charm as expected.

Katrina Kaif is impressive in her short role as a conflicted Bollywood star. Anushka Sharma has a much challenging role and she has indeed worked hard to essay the troubled but confident Aafia. However, she fails in portraying her handicapped condition convincingly and with consistency.

Box-Office Response Expected To Be Good

Despite poor reviews, the movie might get a good opening of around 25 crores across India as there is no competition around. Bauua Singh is already a big name after all the promotions. Shahrukh Khan playing a vertically-challenged man’s character for the first time may also entice the viewers to cinema halls.
