A link road to a new bridge in Bihar that was opened to the public just a month ago was washed away due to heavy rain on Wednesday. The bridge was inaugurated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
With this, the opposition attacked Nitish Kumar about the bridge collapse as the government and Nitish Kumar’s party continued to deny the reports. The collapsed road was near the Sattarghat Bridge on the Gandak river in the Gopalganj region of Bihar. The road is close to 150 kilometers from Patna. Many opposition leaders in the state like Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD and Madan Mohan Jha of the Congress tweeted pictures saying that – ‘brand new Sattarghat Bridge has collapsed just a month after it was inaugurated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’. The bridge had cost over Rs. 260 crores as per reports.
Bihar Government Denies
The Bihar government denied reports saying that it is fake news. The government even put out a clarification on social media. As per the officials, the road two kilometers from the main bridge was the one that was damaged. The link road runs along the embankment but has no direct connection to the Sattarghat Bridge as per the government. The state minister Nand Kishore Yadav told,
“An inquiry has been ordered to find out why the link road collapsed.”
According to reports, the culverts connecting the road to the bridge could not withstand the pressure of the water. Government officials and a team of engineers have reached the spot to assess the damage. Tejashwi Yadav said,
“Washing away of bridges has become a common thing under Nitish Kumar’s rule. Did he inaugurate the bridge before time just to gain some appreciation? We demand that the Bihar government should immediately blacklist the company that has constructed the bridge.”
Congress Bihar Chief Madan Mohan Jha also attacked by saying,
“The bridge was constructed at a cost of Rs. 263.47 crore and inaugurated on June 16. It was washed away on July 15. Now don’t accuse rats of this.”
